When is it a good idea to use a burner phone?
I’m sure you’re an upstanding, law-abiding person, so I won’t detail the potential illicit uses for a burner, but here are some above-board scenarios where a burner phone might come in handy:
You’re going somewhere where your real phone might get stolen or damaged.
You’re concerned that authorities are overstepping their bounds and might target you for constitutionally protected activity like protesting.
You’re traveling and don’t want the hassle of caring for your expensive phone.
For an emergency, as you can dial 911 on a burner that doesn’t even have a SIM card.
To disconnect yourself from the time-sink of a smartphone but still be able to communicate.
You’re just really into personal privacy.

To get started with a burner phone, pick an affordable, unlocked android device. Shop online but do not reserve nor buy online. Go buy with cash, in person, and then using the new device, set up a brand new google account. Avoid using iPhones for burners. They are traceable through the iCloud.
I use a burner phone to do fugitive hunting. In my downtime, I hope to snag one of the worlds Most Wanted and get a million-dollar reward for doing so.
But these days, you might be into other things that require privacy and if so, KEEP YOUR MAIN PHONE AT HOME! It can't be searched if you don't have it on you. For absolute privacy while I hunt dangerous men, I use this off-shore email service.
